Lord Blackwell (played by Mark Strong) is a member of a secret society bent on using black magic to control the population. While he's attempting to carry out a human sacrifice, he's interrupted by Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law). Holmes and Watson are able to hold them at bay until the police arrive to clean up and take Blackwell to prison. Shortly after, he is convicted and executed by hanging. Unfortunately, soon after reports begin to emerge that Blackwell may not be as dead as previously expected. Holmes and Watson need to track him down and put a stop to the secret society's attempt to overthrow the government.

Robert Downey Jr. plays basically the same character in this movie as he plays in Iron Man (and in fact, there was even an Iron Man 2 trailer before the movie), except with a British accent and the filthy, grimy look that has to accompany a movie set in 19th-century England. Jude Law's Watson had more depth, although apparently alternates between being a rather poor doctor (in his inability to correctly determine whether someone is really dead) and an amazing one (in his ability to heal himself after being blown up), not to mention his rather obvious use of a modern-looking hearing aid or earpiece in his left ear.

I felt that the trailer for this movie was a bit misleading. Although everything in the trailer did appear in the movie, the tone of the movie didn't match that of the trailer. I wasn't particularly excited about the movie from watching the trailer, but in actuality it wasn't as full of giants and cage matches as was implied. I would have preferred it not as a period piece, and I would have preferred a little less extraneous content not directly related to the storyline. However, the movie was pretty decent overall and is probably worth seeing.
