God has lost faith in humanity. The last time that happened, in the time of Noah, He cleansed the earth with a great flood. This time, He's sending an army of angels to wipe everyone out. Michael (played by Paul Bettany) is one of the top angels, but he still has some faith left and doesn't think that wiping everyone out is the only solution. He feels so strongly about this that he gives up his wings to become mortal and help fight for humanity.

For some reason that's never really explained, the fate of humanity rests in the womb of a girl known only as Charlie (played by Adrianne Palicki). The angels, as well as a horde of possessed people, are particularly intent on ensuring that child is never born, because if he is allowed to grow up then he may help society regain its faith. This is something that I really didn't understand about the movie, because if God is upset with mankind because we have lost our direction, then focusing vengeance on the one person who can help find it again just doesn't make sense. I was also pretty disappointed with how absurd the movie became as it progressed. It started off well, and parts of it were fun, but really lost it toward the end.
