Police officers Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) are partners that have been working together for several years. After a drug bust goes bad, they are suspended without pay, but Jimmy desperately needs money to pay for his daughter's wedding. He decides to sell a very rare baseball card that should easily bring in enough to cover the costs, but the sale is interrupted when the dealer is robbed. As they investigate, they find themselves in a much more complex situation than they originally anticipated.
After hearing about a number of poor reviews, I was prepared for disappointment, but fortunately it didn't completely live down to my expectations. After repeatedly hearing Kevin Smith's name attached to the movie, I was surprised to see that it didn't feel like any of his other work. However, it appears that he only directed the movie and neither wrote nor appeared in it, and other than Jason Lee in a minor role, it didn't feature the usual actors for a Kevin Smith movie. Had I known that going in, I probably would have had different expectations.
There were a few surprises in the acting for the movie. Bruce Willis played a more kind-hearted character and less of a supercop than we've seen from him in the past, and Tracy Morgan seemed to have most of his mental faculties. Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott were pretty funny at times, but I think that too many of the best bits were spoiled by the trailers. It didn't live up to what I had hoped for when I first heard about the movie, but I also don't think that it deserves all of the bashing that it's taking from the critics.
